American Bully shows come in two main types in South Africa: fun shows and official sanctioned shows. Both can be enjoyable, but they work very differently. Understanding the difference helps the breed grow in a steady, healthy way.
At a fun show, you can expect a relaxed atmosphere. People bring their dogs to practise handling, meet other owners, and sometimes win prizes or “points.” These points are given by the organisers of that specific event. Each fun show can set its own rules and classes. Even when organisers say the points count towards something bigger or follow a standard, bodies like Bully Assure do not recognise them. Bully Assure only counts points earned at their own sanctioned shows. Fun-show points stay at that event. They do not build an official title and do not carry weight outside the day.
Official (sanctioned) shows follow a fixed breed standard. Judges look at structure, movement, temperament, and how closely the dog matches the recognised American Bully type. Points earned there are real. They go towards championship titles that serious breeders and the wider community respect. These shows also encourage better breeding choices over time, because everyone is aiming at the same clear goal instead of whatever looks popular on the day.
Fun shows are useful for practice and building confidence, especially for newer owners. They bring people together. However, because the rules and judging criteria can change from one organiser to the next, they do not push the breed forward in a consistent direction. Without a shared official standard and recognised points, the look and quality of American Bullies can drift. Sanctioned shows protect the integrity of the breed by rewarding dogs that meet proper conformation and temperament requirements. This is how the American Bully improves as a whole, not just for one afternoon.
Points from fun shows mean nothing for official titles or breed development. Sanctioned shows matter because they give the industry a clear, consistent path. Support the shows that help the breed stay strong and recognisable for the long term.
